I had a quick look through the last few months of my blog today and it's rather apparent that a lot of my friends seem to be having babies at the moment. And there are at least another 3 to come this year. I am starting to lack inspiration as to what to knit for these new arrivals. After a while nothing feels more like one baby cardigan than another.
This is the latest in the series.

It's the makings of the Debbie Bliss Striped Sweater from Simply Baby. There's nothing particularly special about it but I do think that a stripey sweater is very effective and it holds a little more interest than doing a plain stocking stitch sweater or cardigan everytime.

I originally wanted to make it in a different colour to the one in the book. I have this habit of always thinking that the colour it's photographed in is the best colour that it could be in which is patently untrue and this semes to stop me from testing out new combinations. But I have a thing about that colour of olive green and so I gave in and stuck to the pattern as it was.
I did manage to make at least one mistake, there are little flaps at the bottom of the sweater on the front and the back and so you continue the garter stitch up the side of these flaps. I, of course, didn't do the same number of garter stitch rows on each side.

I know that the recipient will never notice and neither will his parents but it just annoys me that I never seem to be able to knit something that simple without fluffing at least a little bit of it up. It doesn't matter, you won't be able to see it on the back of a galloping horse, but why can't I pay more attention?
PS: I shall announce the winner of the yarn later this week, I was away this weekend so have yet to do the draw. I have not forgotten!
Posted by Amelia at June 2, 2008 07:21 AMI love the colour combination, it does work well. I am very lucky to have a patient Dh who will painstakingly seek out colours while I tell him it has to be cotton or dk or 4ply. He has the eye for seeing what else will work well. I too always make a mistake somewhere in the pattern. I accept that it is me and that is what makes the garment mine.
Posted by: alison at June 16, 2008 10:01 PMOften, when I am seeing and liking a design I am thinking about new colours, colours which will be much more nice for me than the ones on the picture. But after a while I also often realize that the designer has choosen itīs colour so very well, that exact this special colour is part of the designīs charm. And the green stripes of your baby cardi are so very lovely, one of the best combination for little babies. Although I could also imagine two different shades of pink for a girl! Or dark and light blue. Or simply red and white. Or.....
And I know so very well what you are saying about making mistakes. I really try to give my best, but a thrilling movie, a talk with a friend, or just my own wandering mind and here it is, a mistake in my knitting and I rarely have the power to rip. Itīs all about concentrating on the things I am doing right now and not on the things I will be doing next. More to be at this moment, I think. But on the other side - arenīt we sometimes too critical with our own crafting, too? In any way your little cardigan will be lovely and I am sure also much loved.
Let me please also thank you very very much for your last comment and especially for your generous offer! I so much loved it and immediately had some words with my husband about it. My only problem still is, that I canīt decide between several of CK`s designs, but I dearly and deeply hope that your offer will still be open when I finally come to a solution. You are such a wonderful and warmhearted blog-friend, I have to thank you with all my heart.
Have a great evening with lots of joy, best wishes, Suzi
Great colors combination - love it. My friends are also having babies this year & all I am knitting are socks - easy & quick.
